Abstract: The authors investigated and studied the current situation of school physical education at 66 elementary and middle schools in 11 counties in the “13 provincial poverty-stricken counties to be primarily alleviated” deter-mined by the Guangdong Provincial Government. The results show the followings: school physical education grounds and facilities had been improved, but the regions were unbalanced, the phenomena of waste and shortage exist concurrently; it was difficult to implement national physical education and health curriculum standards, physi-cal education teaching quality was not high; the problem of physical education teacher shortage was alleviated by the bureau, but structural teacher shortage in urban and rural areas was serious, professional title structure irrational-ity and promotion difficulty exist concurrently, career prospect pessimism caused physical education team instabil-ity; the proportions of students who liked physical education courses and participated in extracurricular physical ex-ercise ware all higher than those of students in non poverty counties in China and Guangdong province. The sleep time of students in poverty counties or non poverty counties in Guangdong province was shorter than that stipulated by the Ministry of Education and the average sleep time of students in China. In the critical period of developing precise poverty alleviation in Guangdong province, clarifying problems existing in school physical education de-velopment in poverty counties is the key to precise orientation, precise identification and taking precise measures for the sustainable development of school physical education in poverty counties in Guangdong province.
