Abstract: The authors analyzed the essence of education, the essence of physical education, as well as physical education in education and education in physical education, so as to provide a theoretical criterion for the scientific development of the education and physical education undertakings. Research results indicated the followings: it is a consensus among philosophers and educators all over the world at all times to consider “comprehensive develop-ment of human beings” as the essence of education; physical education is a sort of education; the essence of physi-cal education is to educate people, to exert the educational functions of physical education to the maximum extent; to cultivate people with sports spirit both mentally and physically by using such a means as physical education is the ultimate goal of physical education. Therefore, physical education and education are consistent in terms of essence. “The combination of physical education and education” will be replaced by “the return of physical education to education”; only when physical education returns to education can education returns to its essence. “The return of physical education to education” is still a stage goal; when physical education returns to the big family of education, there will be no need to mention the so-called “return of physical education to education”; developing physical edu-cation at the level of education is the irreversible trend of historical development.
