| （School of Physical Education，South China Normal University，Guangzhou 510006，China） Abstract: By analyzing the concept of physical education defined by predecessors, the author put forward the fol-lowing opinions: physical education in China is a cultural activity to constantly improve or present sports perform-ance in order to better realize sports value; “to constantly improve or present sports performance in order to better realize sports value” is the essential connotation of physical education, the overall requirement for sports means de-velopment, also the intrinsic power and mechanism of sports development, also the key to that physical education is able to have independent research subjects, to exist independently, and to become a science; physical education is a cultural activity that turns thoughts, habits, ethics, wisdom, will, knowledge and technologies into sport, and ex-pressed by constantly improving and presenting sports performance.
