由于近年来亚洲地区高速度的社会经济发展，使这一地区在国际经济和政治中占有越来越重要的地位，成为世所瞩目的焦点。可以预言,在未来的几十年中，亚洲地区也将会在国际体育事务中扮演越来越重要的角色，发挥越来越重要的作用。足球是亚洲各国家拥有广泛群众基础的运动项目，各国都从本国的特征及传统出发，制订了不同于西方的足球发展政策、制度和管理方式，通过与西方不同的途径实现足球的快速发展。特别是2018年将在日本东京举办的奥运会足球比赛，2022年将在卡塔尔举办的足球世界杯比赛，这些国际足球赛事也进一步将亚洲足球与社会发展推向了世界舞台，吸引全球关注。
    从学术研究的角度来看，以下这些亚洲足球与社会发展中的热门研究领域将吸引学界的广泛关注：亚洲足球的规模和多样性；亚洲足球在基础设施、体育参与、商业化和职业化等方面的发展不均衡；政府对足球政治性的重视、各国在足球发展中的不同政治表达；亚洲足球中的妇女地位；亚洲足球中的宗教的问题；防止腐败和假球等。因此，研究全球化、商业化、职业化、非政治化对亚州足球与社会发展进程的影响，以及它们和不同类型的体育组织结构相互作用所产生的新挑战，同时这些影响和挑战如何使亚洲足球凸显出利益，合作，冲突的特点，都具有深远的研究价值。
    为了促进中西方研究亚洲足球和社会发展的学者进行研究交流，本次大会邀请了中西方研究亚洲足球的著名学者和国际足联、亚洲足联的政府官员共同探讨亚洲足球的未来。以期可以为各国修订足球发展政策，理解体育管理机构及职能，发展竞技体育和全民健身，防止腐败和建设公平的体育环境，举办大型体育赛会等方面，提供新的思路。

Special  Issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport
   
Soccer and Society in Modern Asia
The 21st century saw the rapid development of Asian economies and the rise of Asian countries. Trade, exchange and cooperation within Asia and beyond have never been as active or as thriving as at present. Modernisation, commercialisation and globalisation have facilitated communication and cooperation between Asian and Western countries. Asia is playing an increasingly important role in global economy and politics. Together with the rise of economy, Asia also become increasingly involved in international sport. On the one hand, many Asian countries have become major players in elite sport. On the other hand, the growing consumer market has facilitated the rapid development of sport industry in Asia, creating a new growth engine for world economy.    
Soccer is one of the most popular sports in Asia. The development of soccer in Asian countries in the past decades reflected the transformation of Asian society. This special issue aims at understanding how soccer played its part in the development of Asian society in the current international political and economic dynamics. We welcome papers on the topics of the history of soccer in Asia; mass participation in soccer; the professionalization and commercialization of elite soccer; government policy toward soccer development; recent cases of gambling and/or corruption around professional soccer leagues; the economic and cultural impact of soccer, especially the World Cup, on Asian countries. Topics may also include the role of soccer in social integration, the relationships between soccer, religious conflict and group violence; the communications, exchanges and co-operations between Asian and Western countries in the areas of training, coaching, marketing and etc.  
   
A conference based on the above themes will be held in Shanghai University of Sport, China between 21 and 24 October 2016
